Biography

Harris was serving as a Sergeant in Company B of the 38th Regiment U.S. Colored Troops when his unit participated in the Battle of Chaffin's Farm on September 29, 1864 in Virginia. Over nine years later, on February 18, 1874, he was issued the Medal of Honor for " [g] allantry in the assault" at Chaffin's Farm.

James Harris is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington County, Virginia.
