Bhante Vimalaramsi

Bhante Vimalaramsi (born 1946) is an American Buddhist monk and abbot of Dhammasukha Meditation center in Lesterville Missouri.

Biography

Bhante began with the Burmese style of vipassana meditation in 1974 at the age of 28. He became a monk in 1986 and practiced meditation intensively. In 1995 he wrote a book on The Anapanasati Sutta, and more than one million copies have been distributed in seven languages so far. In 2005 he was given the honorary title of Sayadaw Gyi (Higher Meditation Teacher). Venerable Vimalaramsi has developed a pnemonic system of training the helps a student to practice Right Effort ALL THE TIME. Students are having great success with this practice relieving a great deal of suffering in their lives and becoming much happier.

In 2006 Venerable was dually nominated to become the first U.S.A Representative for the World Buddhist Supreme Summit Council in Kobe, Japan which meets every two years. He was inaugurated into this lifetime position officially on November 1, 2008 in the New Royal Hall of Buddhism in Japan at the opening of the 5th Summit Conference. The Summit represents 35 Countries where Buddhism is taught through many different traditions. The three principal creators of the summit format in 1998 were H.H. the Dalai Lama of Tibet, Ven. Dr. Enshinjoh of Japan, and the Raja of Thailand. The summit seeks to return to the original teachings and practice of the Buddha in order to help aid and refresh all traditions of Buddhism in this 21st Century. It is hoped that the information uncovered by coming together will be shared with all peoples of the world and assist the development of a more peaceful co-existence.

Teachings

Bhante teaches directly from the Suttas in the Pali Canon and places less emphasis on the commentaries. He teaches by directly reading from the Suttas and explaining what they mean and how to use them in practical terms.
