Ryker's Island is a fictional comic book maximum security prison located in the New York City of Marvel Comics' Marvel Universe.

History

It is a counterpart to the real-world New York prison Rikers Island and first appeared in "Amazing Spider-Man" #4, although its name was not given in a story until some years later. Apart from its conventional facilities for holding non-powered criminals, it also has its own specialized containment facilities for imprisoning superhuman convicts known as the Raft, which first appeared in "Alias" #26. However, on many occasions, "super"-criminals who rely on equipment for their powers (such as the Vulture or the Shocker) have been imprisoned in conventional cells, separated from their special paraphernalia. In (written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by David Finch), The Raft was the setting of a large scale breakout in which several supervillains escaped from captivity.

Known Inmates

* Bullseye
* Daredevil ("Daredevil" vol. 2 #80)
* Jigsaw
* Kingpin
* The Punisher
* Sandman
* Shocker
* Vulture

Other Media

Television

* In the "Spider-Man" episode "Guilty," Robbie Robertson (who was brainwashed into leading a criminal activity) was incarcerated here thanks to Kingpin hacking into the police files to make Robbie go there instead of New York State Penitentiary. Richard Fisk and Tombstone were also imprisoned there and reveal to Robbie that they orchestrated his brainwashing. In "The Prowler," a flashback showed that Hobie Brown was incarcerated there after being in violation of his parole. Though Kingpin arranged for his release after he saved Richard Fisk from an attempt on his life.
* Ryker's Island is also seen at the beginning of "The Spectacular Spider-Man" episode "Group Therapy", where Doctor Octopus, Sandman, Rhino and Vulture, as well as the Enforcers (including Shocker) were being held. The villains escape after Electro knocks out the generator that powers the prison.

Film

The prison is briefly mentioned in "Spider-Man 3", as Flint Marko's prison which he had escaped from before the beginning of the film. Also in the 2003 movie Daredevil, after the final fight with Kingpin Daredevil mentioned Rykers.
