Tanjore Maharashtrian

Tanjore Maharashtrians are Marathi-speaking people, who had settled down in Tanjore (now Thanjavur), Tamil Nadu nearly four centuries ago. They had gone there following the conquer of the area by half-brother of Shivaji, Ekoji (or Vyankoji).

It is a community which now relates more to the local environment than with Maharashtra of which they are in awe but keep a respectful distance because the language is a barrier. They speak Marathi heavily accented with Tamiul and has words which are frozen in time. The words and idioms used at the time of the migration with the victors to Tanjore are still in use and Maharashtrians are scarce able to follow that.
