Gateway Center is a station on the Port Authority of Allegheny County's light rail network. As of 2006 it is the westernmost extent within downtown Pittsburgh of the "T" system. Passengers embarking at Gateway Center may travel free to any of the other stations in the Downtown area–First Avenue, Steel Plaza, and Wood Street. There are future plans to rebuild Gateway Center as part of the North Shore Connector project. There will also be an extension from the station going under the Allegheny River through the Allegheny River Tunnel over to the North Shore.
Located within the station is a mural by artist Romare Bearden. Commissioned by the Port Authority as part of the original station complex, the mural is now valued at $15 million, and there are now concerns about the mural's fate as the extension project moves forward.
