The .338 Federal is a rifle cartridge designed by Federal Cartridge and Sako that provides similar energy to a 7 mm Remington Magnum in a necked-up .308 case. The idea was to create a big game caliber with reasonable recoil for lightweight rifles.

Comparison

Federal claims that the cartridge provides energy equal to a 7mm Rem Mag with less recoil, and greater than the .30-06 Springfield in bullets of the same weight, making it even faster than the .308. A basic comparison helps clarify these claims. Also included is the older .358 Winchester also based on the .308, which doesn't have a very large following, but should provide similar performance.
