Martina Steckholzer (born 1974 in Sterzing, South Tyrol, Italy) is an artist based in Vienna. She studied Fine Arts at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna with Prof. Gunter Damisch and Heimo Zobernig. In 2007 she was selected Artist in Residence in London.
Work
Steckholzer focuses on capturing the visual aesthetics of contemporary art and on finding new grounds for the conceivement of abstract art in the 21st century. In her current exhibition at Galerie Meyer Kainer Steckholzer creates caleidoscopic fields of different aesthetical references and theoretical contexts. Using a distinguished painterly technique she undermines the arthistorical strategy of appropriation and opens a new space for abstract painting. Steckholzer has shown work internationally in exhibitions including Superflat at Dreizehnzwei in Vienna, Block at ApexArt in New York, The Triumph of Painting at the Saatchi Gallery in London and Extension Turn at the Austrian Cultural Forum in Tokyo. She is represented by Galerie Meyer Kainer in Vienna and Wilkinson Gallery in London.
