George Kirgo (
March 26 ,1926 -August 22 ,2004 ) was a US television and film writer.A
screenwriter since 1954, his many credits include episodes of "Mary Tyler Moore" and "Love, American Style ". He penned the films "Red Line 7000 ", "Spinout ", "Don't Make Waves ", and "Voices" and the TV movies "Get Christie Love! ", "The Man in the Santa Claus Suit ", "Angel on My Shoulder ", and "My Palikari ".He also occasionally appeared onscreen. Following the publication of Kirgo's 1958 comic novel "Hercules, the Big Greek Story",
Jack Paar invited him on his talk show. Kirgo also became a regular panelist onMonty Hall 's game show "Your First Impression " and was a movie reviewer onNew York television.Kirgo was president of the
Writers Guild of America West from 1987 to 1991. He presided over the union during the contentious 22-week strike in 1988 over compensation from home video sales. He was also a founding member of theNational Film Preservation Board of theLibrary of Congress .He died at age 78 after a long illness.
