William de Leftwich Dodge

Williamd de Leftwich Dodge (1867- 1935 ) was an American artist. Dodge was born at Liberty, Va., who studied in Paris and Munich and entered first place in the examination for the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Mr. Dodge's work as a mural painter was represented in New York by his decorations of the Empire Theatre, of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, and of other theatres and hotels. Among his principal works were the decorations of the Caf de I'Opra, Paris, the Folies Bergre, murals for the Panama Pacific International Exposition, for the Flag Room at the capital at Albany, mosaics for the Hall of Records, New York, "Signing of the Peace," at Versailles, "Taking of the Fort de Vaux", and murals for the Library of Congress building at Washington, D.C..

He also painted six murals in the art deco interiors of the Buffalo City Hall building in Buffalo, New York. Two large murals in the main entrance hall represent the city's role as a border city while four murals at the end of hallways represent the city government's services as "Charity," "Protection," "Education," and "Construction." The six murals were completed in 1931.
