Luigi Palmieri (April 22 ,1807 -September 9 1896 ) was an Italianphysicist andmeteorologist .Biography
He was born at
Faicchio ,Benevento ,Italy . He died atNaples ,Italy . Palmieri made observation of the eruptions on Mount Vesuvius. He also researched earthquakes and meteorological phenomena.Palmieri received a degree in architecture from the
University of Naples . In 1845, Palmieri was the professor of physics at the Royal Naval School at Naples. In 1847, Palmieri was the chair of physics at the university. In 1848, he began working at theVesuvius Observatory . By 1854, Palmieri was the observatory director. Using aseismometer for the detection and measurement of ground tremors, Palmieri was able to detect very slight movements and to predict the eruption of volcanos.Using a modified
Peltier electrometer , he researchedatmospheric electricity . He developed a modifiedMorse telegraph . He improved theanemomete andpluviometer .Memberships
