- List of ISS spacewalks
This is a list of ISS spacewalks. Spacewalks for the support of the
International Space Station (ISS) are major milestones in the building and maintaining of the station.Cite web|url=http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/station/eva/index.html|title=Space Station Extravehicular Activity|accessyear=2008|accessmonthday=October 3|publisher=NASA |year=2008|author=National Aeronautics and Space Administration] Spacewalks are performed to install new components to the station, to re-wire systems for modules and equipment, and to monitor, install, and retrieve science experiments.Cite web|url=http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/station/eva/construction.html|title=Preparing for Hands-On Construction in Outer Space|accessyear=2008|accessmonthday=October 3|publisher=NASA|year=2008|author=NASA] Cite web|url=http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/station/eva/construction.html|title=A New Generation of Space Robotics|accessyear=2008|accessmonthday=October 3|publisher=NASA|year=2008|author=NASA] The ISS is a joint project of six space agencies and 16 countries: the United States' National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA ),Russian Federal Space Agency (RSA),Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA),Canadian Space Agency (CSA/ASC),Brazilian Space Agency (AEB) and theEuropean Space Agency (ESA).Cite web|url=http://www.hq.nasa.gov/osf/iss_reports/archive_reports.htm|title=International Space Station Daily Report|accessyear=2008|accessmonthday=September 29|publisher=NASA|year=2008|author=NASA]Due to the complexity of building a station in space, NASA and its partners train astronauts extensively, preparing them to encounter surprises during spacewalks, teaching them how to assemble special tools and equipment, and carefully coordinate every activity during spacewalks. A total of 37 space shuttle missions were scheduled to assemble, outfit and begin research use of the station from 1998 to 2005.
As of
July 15 ,2008 , there have been a total of 114 spacewalks devoted to assembly and maintenance of the International Space Station.Cite web|url=http://www.hq.nasa.gov/osf/iss_reports/reports2008/07-15-2008.htm|title=ISS On-Orbit Status 7/15/08|accessyear=2008|accessmonthday=September 29|publisher=NASA|year=2008|author=NASA] A total time of 718 hours, 48 minutes has been spent in EVA activities. 86 of these EVAs have been from the station, totaling 523 hours, 30 minutes.28 assembly EVAs have been performed from a shuttle, 53 from the
Quest Joint Airlock , and 24 from thePirs docking compartment .Cite web|url=http://www.hq.nasa.gov/osf/iss_reports/reports2007/11-24-2007.htm|title=ISS On-Orbit Status report 11/24/07| accessdate = 2007-11-27|publisher=NASA|year=2007|author=NASA] [cite web| author=NASA | title=Extravehicular Activities (EVA) Statistics Current as of 2/23/08 | date=2008-09-29 | publisher=NASA Office of Space Operations| url =http://www.hq.nasa.gov/osf/EVA/EVA_totals_table.html | work = | pages = | accessdate = 2007-08-12 | language = ]1998-1999
