Duff Pringle is heading across the country, aiming for his new job in California. His used Ford Escort barely makes it a hundred miles from home before breaking down. Using his laptop, he pieces together a way to continue his trip. He meets several people along the way who help and hender his trip. There's Stu, a hitchhiker with a secret; Bonnie, an aspiring singer with a con artist for a mother; two thugs looking for a trunkfull of cash; and Moony, a terrier dog prone to carsickness. Duff adopts Moony and Moony throws up in his car. Duff stops to clean up the vomit and the thugs steal his money.
