Hugh Courtenay (1303 – 1377) was the 10th Earl of Devon in England, and a founder knight of the Order of the Garter [By Douglas Richardson, Kimball G. Everingham, "Magna Carta Ancestry: A Study in Colonial and Medieval Families" (2005), p. 236.] .
Hugh married Margaret daughter of Humphrey De Bohun, Earl of Hereford and of Essex and maternal granddaughter of King Edward I of England.
They had a large family which included Sir Hugh, Thomas, Edward of Godlington, William the Archbishop of Canterbury, John, Sir Philip of Powderham Castle, Humphrey and Sir Peter. Second son Edward married Emeline Downey [ [http://www.thepeerage.com/p939.htm#i9383 thePeerage.com - Person Page 939 ] ] who bore Sir Hugh Courtenay, father of the Hugh Courtenay who was killed [ [http://www.thepeerage.com/p940.htm#i9396 thePeerage.com - Person Page 940 ] ] at the battle of Tewkesbury, 1471.
