Instituto Brasileiro de Mercado de Capitais (Ibmec) is a Brazilian Research Institute specializing in Finance. It was founded in 1970 in Rio de Janeiro, and in 1985 began the first Executive MBA in Finance program in Brazil. IBMEC expanded to São Paulo in 1987, and Belo Horizonte in 1999.

Ibmec Educacional was created in 1999, with the acquisition of all of the teaching operations of the Brazilian Capital Market Institute (IBMEC), including the assets, liabilities, trademarks and licenses, by a group of investors. This year also saw the launch of activities of the Business Administration and Economics School of Ibmec São Paulo, offering undergraduate courses in the two fields, marking the beginning of the trajectory of Ibmec São Paulo.

Starting in 2004, Ibmec São Paulo becomes an independent institution, fully reinvesting its economic surpluses back into its own educational activities. With this gesture, the donators sought to follow the model of the best private universities around the world, with the aim of transforming Ibmec São Paulo into a center of excellence at the international level in the fields of business administration and economics, as well as ensure its sustainability. At the same time, Ibmec Educacional S.A. incorporates, in addition to the Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte branches, the Brazilian Advanced Technology Institute (IBTA), founding Veris Educacional S.A.

Although it has the same origin and name, Ibmec São Paulo is entirely separate in both operational and ownership terms from its related companies in Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte.

In January 2006 the new campus in Vila Olímpia is inaugurated, designed in accordance with the most advanced standards in architecture and technology.
