The Sites

The school is based on two sites, named North and South Site, linked together by an adjoining field. In the period before the co-educational era, the South Site was host to the Thorpe St Andrew Grammar School, and was attended by pupils in the area who passed the 11-plus exam. Those who failed the 11-plus attended the Comprehensive, which was then situated on the North Site. Unsurprisingly, in those days there was a great rivalry between the two schools, and regular sporting events were held that were fiercely contested. To this day there remains a certain amount of rivalry between the pupils resident on either site, though this owes much to the segregation of pupils from separate sites within classes from years 7-9 (a policy which is relaxed somewhat for students in years 10-11, and especially years 12-13). All students have lessons on both sites and 'cross' between them on a one-way system. The North Site is host to the Modern Foreign Languages, English, Drama, Design and Technology, RE and Media departments, as well as the library (or Learning Resource Centre, as it has become known). The South Site is where the Science, Mathematics, History, Geography, Art and Music departments and classes can be found. Various other facilities are shared between the two sites, such as Computer rooms and gyms for Physical Education classes. Classrooms are named by their site and a number, e.g. "S10" on South Site and "N20" on North Site. Students are either based in a house on the North or South Site. Students are arranged into forms within the houses, and all forms must attend house assembly which occurs three times within the two-week schedule. There are 3 houses on each site, which are all named after constellations; Altair, Mira and Cygnus (constellation)on North Site and Vega, Polaris and Sirius on South Site. In each house there are 9 forms. And you go to these forms in the morning and after lunch. There is a large library (LRC) that can be used by all pupils.

Sixth Form

There are 6 sixth form form groups on North site and 8 sixth form form groups on south site. Sixth formers are required to attend form once a day, however they must ensure that they attend 3 afternoon forms a week (an afternoon form is 20 minutes and a morning form is 5 minutes). Year 12 are expected to do 4 ASLevels and an enrichment course (GCSE Italian or Spanish, Sports community leader award, Young enterprise or Certificate of Financial Studies). Year 13 are expected to do 3 A2-Levels.Year 13 students are entered into a general study exam, this is to make their CV's look good and can also be something to fall back on when applying to university. Students who failed GCSE maths and/or English have the option to retake these in year' 12 and 13. In addition students who failed their GCSE ICT have the oppurtunity to do an ICT CLAIT course.

Sixth formers do not have to wear the school uniform, they are allowed to wear their own clothes but they must comply to a set of rules regarding what is viewed as acceptable and unnaceptable (e.g. T-shirts with large slogans or large logos are not acceptable.)

Sixth formers have their own areas that they can go to away from the rest of the school. There is a bungalow on North with a kitchen, dining area, computer room, conservatory and quiet study room, the head of sixth form is also based here. In addition there is an extension to the library for sixth formers with modern computers, university information and important study books. There is also a small computer room on South site that is purely for sixth formers. Such six form students such as Alexander Hunton show great prospect and we are monitoring his progess, we're thinking the next priminister or minimally a very sucsessful mp. Some 6th from students however have disgusting abnormalities, Oliver Lamb is a good example, this half English half Ethiopien student likes to feel his excrution.

Staff

The principal is Ian Clayton. Each school house has a head and assistant head of houseThe Cygnus head of house was Iain Mackintosh and he was assisted by Judith Varley.

The head of the 6th form is Mrs. Eccleston.

The ICT Technician for North Site is Stephen Dewsbury.

The head of Mira house is Mr. Bowman.

The head of Altair house is Mr Robb.

The head of Vega house is Mrs.Lovett.

The heads of Sirius house are Mr. Thurling and Miss Holmes.

Constructions

An astroturf has recently been constructed on the school field, allowing students to play football/(soccer) in all weather conditions. The astroturf can be rented out for £40 per hour.

The school has its own science block, a construction separate from the main school building. It was built to replace the dilapidated science rooms in the main south site building. It sports air conditioning in every classroom, as well as fume cupboards and other scientific equipment.
A new technology block containing CAD/CAM machinery has been built in the last academic year. Its Eco friendly design helps reduce the carbon footprint of the building. It can be rented to businesses or groups who wish to use it. There are plans to build a wind turbine that will power the technology block.
