star in theconstellation Carina. It is classified as aluminous blue variable and is one of the most luminous stars in theMilky Way . The large distance (20,000light-year s) and intervening dust mean that the star is not visible to the naked eye; itsapparent brightness varies irregularly between 7.1m and 9.0m. The star is surrounded by a largeplanetary nebula , formed by material expulsed from the star by its powerfulstellar wind . The star is apparently in a transitional phase between a massive class O bluesupergiant and aWolf-Rayet star .References
