Handan College is situated in Handan, an old city with 8000-year history in the south of Hebei province, where is adjacent to Taihang Mountain and the Fuyang River. Handan College, a former junior normal school of Handan county, which was founded in December, 1905, has been engaged in higher education for over 60 years. The college has witnessed several historical periods from the end of Qing Dynasty to the foundation of the People’s Republic of China. Therefore the important education policies of each period have already exerted great influence on its development and the improvements in its formation from a primary normal school of Handan County to a junior senior normal school and to higher education of Handan City. Owing to its long history and continuous improvements, Handan College has developed into a comprehensive and modernized institution, with a construction area of 413,846 square meters, among which the teaching building covers 173,894 square meters, and students’ apartments 55,867 square meters. The total value of fixed assets stands up to 12,768,000 yuan, including 31,184,200 yuan of equipments and apparatus. The multi-function library is equipped with 595,000 books and a digital library and advanced equipments and technology of multi-media and computer network have been used widely in teaching and scientific research. So the campus looks harmonious and elegant, simple and quiet, bathed in a thick cultural and academic atmosphere.For the sake of a decade, there is nothing better than to grow trees, while for the sake of a century, there is nothing better than to cultivate people. In the past 60 years, 30,000 students have graduated from Handan College and more than 10,000 full-time students are studying here with great expectations.To depend on people is the core principle of the college’s development policy. Among 833 staff, there are 500 full-time teachers and 153 teachers with a doctor or a master degree, 208 professors and associate professors. Owing to their efforts, many teachers have made great achievements and gained repudiations and prizes as following: 4 National Outstanding Experts awarded the Special Subsidy from the National Council, 16 winners of the “Zeng Xian-zi Teachers’ Award”, 12 national and provincial Model and Excellent teachers, 2 Middle-aged Key Teachers, 13 “Excellent Expert of Social Science”, “Outstanding Specialized and Technical Experts of Handan City” and “Century-Crossing Experts”, 25 teachers with teaching awards of the city and the province. In order to strengthen the force of teaching and scientific research, 35 nation-famous and world-famous scholars have been invited as visiting or part-time professors. It can be described as famous scholars gathering and scientific research outstanding, As the saying goes “Only with the help of sound wind can I be sent to the sky.” In recent years, science and technology has been taken as the most powerful production force in the development of economy and society. In order to meet the requirements of development of Handan as well as Hebei province, Handan College has centered on the improvement of scientific research and undergraduate course construction, and made outstanding achievements. Till now, there are 15 undergraduate specialties and specialties for three-year students in our college. The teachers have taken up 50 research projects and have a lot of publications as: 14 monographs, 124 chiefly-edited textbooks and reference materials and 5 dictionaries, , and 1267 research papers, 142 items of calligraphies and paintings, 16 tapes and videos. They have gained 63 scientific awards from the province and the government. The college is achieving to make teaching and scientific research gear to the stream of social development, which will go forward no matter meeting what obstacles. As the sea can contain all the rivers and stream, the college has worked with other institutions in academic and educational cooperation. Since 2000, a lot famous professors and scholars have been invited to give lectures and make academic reports form well-known universities such as Tsinghua University, Peking University, etc.. The lectures and reports are widely popular with students and teachers and conducive to improve the academic atmosphere on campus and arouse student interests in study. Meanwhile 55 teachers have gone abroad to study as visiting scholars at famous universities in USA, the UK, Canada, New Zealand, and so on. We have made academic cooperation with institutions such as Dongruan Group, Singapore Institute of Technology, and the academic cooperation with New Zealand will be in effect in a short period. All this shows that the college will lay emphasis on the academic tradition and development, looking forward to cooperate and exchange ideas with other institutions.The Yangzi River flows toward the sea all day and all night, the construction of the college are going on every day and night. The construction of the first campus will be carried on in very short time, while the construction of the second campus site has been listed in the eleventh Five-year Plan of the Economic and Social Development of Handan. Chinese Language and Literature Major Chinese language and literature major is generally to cultivate Chinese language education-oriented teachers for secondary education, and other professionals as secretary, propagator, advertisement designer, and men of letters for the party and government organizations.There are 38 full-time teachers, including 4 professors, 14 associate professors, among which 18 teachers have master degree. In recent three years, they have edited more than 20 monographs and textbooks, and about 200 papers published in the provincial publications, taken up several research projects: 2 items of the national research and 5 provincial ones. In the reference, there is a possession of more than 2,300 volumes of professional books, journals more than 100 species, CDs more than 1,000, and the possession of the school library amounts to 118,262 volumes and 170 periodicals on Chinese language and literature.

The Ideological and Political Education MajorThe ideological and political education department is specialized to cultivate teachers with overall quality in the ideological and political education of secondary education, and also to train ideological and political workers for the state -administrative organs and enterprises.The teaching staff consists of 23 full-time teachers, including 2 professors, associate professor of seven people. The teachers with senior titles account for 35% of the total number; teachers with master's degrees, including one doctorate and 16 masters, account for 65%. In recent years, the teaching professionals have 15 articles published in national core periodicals, released more than 100 papers in various provincial publications, and more than 20 monographs and teaching textbooks published.

Mathematics and Applied Mathematics MajorMathematics and Applied Mathematics Major is intended to cultivate mathematics teachers for secondary education and also train enterprises- oriented management personnel.The full-time teachers include 4 professors, associate professor, 11. The title of senior teachers accounts for 62% of the total number, teachers with a master's degrees account for 47%. In recent years, the teachers have 8 monographs published, and released more than 200 papers in provincial periodicals, 10 articles extracted and retrieval led by the British SA and Mathematics Digest. Teaching achievement awards, the provincial level, have exceeded 8 times. They are carrying on 5 provincial-level research subjects. English Language and Literature MajorEnglish language and literature major is oriented to cultivate English teachers for secondary education, as well as high-quality personnel such as the translator and foreign secretary. The 23 full-time teachers include three professors, associate professors 6, among them 12 teachers with a master degree. In recent years, the teachers have completed more than 170 research projects, edited 52 textbooks and teaching materials and translated 6 works, and released 100 papers. Besides the seven multi-media language laboratories and ten language laboratories, there are also equipped with computer classrooms, VCD audio equipment, high-speed tape duplicator, radio proximity launchers and other modern teaching equipments. The total value of these equipments is over 140 million yuan. In addition, there are also 3,400 volumes of various foreign-language books.

Historical Education MajorHistorical major is history teachers- oriented for secondary education and also trains the civil service workers such as researchers and secretaries for administrative organs. The teaching staff, 21 teachers, consist of two professors, associate professor, 6. In the past three years, teachers have released over 100 papers . In the reference room, there are more than 2,300 volumes of books, magazines and newspapers about 40, and in the college library there are up to 100,000 volumes of history books.

Fine Arts MajorFine arts major is to cultivate art-oriented talents specialized in artistic design, landscape planning, decoration, advertising design, animation, video, photography and other art professionals for administrative organs and enterprises.. The full-time teachers stand up to 29, including two professors and 5 associate professors. In recent years, teachers award entries has been nearly 50 times above the provincial level, among which there are 13 winners of gold, 3 silver, and 5 bronze. Many pieces of works are collected by well-known art gallery and museum, which have been released in more than 1,000 books and magazines in domestic and abroad. "Oil Painting" was rated as the first batch of excellent courses in Hebei University courses. Computer Science and Technology MajorComputer Science and Technology is oriented to cultivate the talents in computer applications and the development of human culture towards units and enterprises of all types such as administrative organs and social groups. The 38 teachers include 11 associate professors, releasing more than 100 papers in academic journals and magazines for the past five years. The total value of teaching equipment stands up to 500 million. The four computer rooms and a number of modern hardware can make field programmable, network installation and maintenance and virtual network in some experiments. The total area of computer laboratory is over 2,000 square meter, and the computer books are 50,000 copies. In cooperation with Eastsoft Group, they have made an effort to establish the largest software training base in northern China.

Geography Science MajorGeography science major is intended to cultivate geography teachers for basic education, and also train specialized technicians and management personnel for the executive-oriented enterprises. The 20 professional teachers include the 3 associate professors, who have released more than 100 articles in academic journals and magazines for the past five yearsThe department enjoys six laboratories concerning a geographical information system (GIS), geology, maps and remote sensing, astronomy, soil, vegetation and so on, covering an area of 1100M2. The total value of equipments is worth 68 million yuan. School libraries hosts 1,000 species of books, accounting for 5,000 volumes of books, magazines and professional audio-video information, which can enrich teaching and research to meet the needs of the profession.

Physical Education majorPhysical education major is to train physics-oriented secondary education teachers and cultivate technical personnel and management personnel facing enterprises of all types. The 33 teachers include professors, associate professors of nine people. The teaching staff has more than 100 scientific articles released in the provincial publication, and completed three provincial research project. The total value of equipments stands up to 480 million yuan, and the area of laboratories nearly reaching 3500 M2. The 35 laboratories are concerning mechanical, thermal, optical, electromagnetic, electrical, atomic physics, electronics, physics laboratory methods, 10 modern physics laboratory and a computer room. Professional books cover 3,066 kinds, amounting to 18,310 copies.

Biological Science Major A biological science major is geared to cultivate the biological sciences educator on the basis of education and training and also train operation-oriented personnel for enterprises.The staff of 19 teachers includes 3 professors, associate professor of 8 people, lecturers 8, and 11 teachers have a master's degree. Three visiting professors: two doctoral are tutors and one is a master instructor. The teachers have cooperated with other institutions to take on 3 national research projects, four provincial-level projects, and one horizontal and released 100 papers in various journals, among which 12 are core journal articles, 2 articles extracted by SCI.Seven high standard biological laboratories are established as followings: plant, animals, human anatomy laboratory, biochemistry laboratory microscope laboratory, plant physiology laboratory, with a total area of 1,100 M2 and1.1 million yuan of teaching equipments and 8,000 volumes of biological books and journals.

Musical Education Major Musical education major is to cultivate professional music teachers for basic education and train management personnel performing arts for administrative organs, enterprises, and social organizations.The teaching staff, 28 professional teachers, is excellent, including 2 professors, associate professor of five, 5 lecturers. In recent years, dozens of articles have been published in academic journals and magazines. Teachers have participated in the international, national, provincial and municipal professional competitions and have achieved outstanding results. Educational Technology MajorEducation technology major is generally oriented towards primary and secondary schools, vocational and technical training institutions of higher education to cultivate talents in information technology and audio-visual teaching management, also facing the province's administrative body, documentary archive (stations), the party propaganda department, TV, film, network, distance education center, the advertising company, studio to train technical professionals.The 19 professional teachers include 9 professors or associate professors. In cooperation with other institutions, they have taken on two national research projects, three provincial projects, and a horizontal one. They have edited teaching materials, electronic materials, and teaching aids, and released 80 papers in various journals. More than 100 materials have been produced, broadcast or published.
