Butterworth was a township occupying the southeastern part of the parish of Rochdale, in the hundred of Salford, Lancashire, England. [ [http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/unit_page.jsp?u_id=10344402&c_id=10001043 A vision of Butterworth Tn/CP] ] The centre of Butterworth was convert|3|mi|km|0 east of the market town of Rochdale

Butterworth was an extensive township, dating from a very ancient time, and encompassed the chapelry of Milnrow, the village of Newhey and the smaller hamlets of Clegg, Wildhouse, Tunshill, Belfield, Butterworth Hall, Lowhouse, Haughs, and Bleaked-gate-cum-Roughbank within its borders. Butterworth also extended into territory which included Hollingworth Lake within its borders, in what is now Littleborough.

Butterworth was divided into two subdistricts; "Butterworth Freehold" and "Butterworth Lordship". These 'sides' refer to the ancient terms of tenure, some freehold, some of the Lord of the Manor by various rents and services. [ [http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=53030 'Townships: Butterworth', A History of the County of Lancaster: Volume 5] ] In the northeast of this township was Butterworth Moor, a "dreary district" contiguous to Blackstone Edge.

Until the middle of the 19th century Butterworth Hall stood in the fields on the River Beal. When the Hall burned down, it was replaced by Butterworth Hall Farm.

In 1830, Butterworth was recorded to have 5,554 inhabitants. [ [http://www.mancuniensis.info/ButterworthFP.htm SALFORD HUNDREDANCESTRY, ANNALS AND HISTORY] ]
