Herman Liebaers

Herman Liebaers (b. Tienen, 1919) is a Belgian linguist. He was the first Fleming to become "Marshal of the Royal Household" of the Royal Court of Belgium.

He was married to the late Isa Hereng, and their daughter Inge Liebaers is a Professor of genetics at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

Education

He obtained a Master degree in literature from Ghent University

Career

In 1943 he started working at the Royal Library of Belgium in Brussels ("Albertina"), where he would become Director in 1956. During the war he was captured by the Nazis and imprisoned in the concentration camps of Breendonk and Huy. From 1951 until 1956, he was Assistant Secretary of the Belgian American Educational Foundation. From 1969 until 1974 he was president of the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA), and currently honorary president. From 1973 until 1981, he was "Marshal of the Royal Household" of king Baudouin I of Belgium. Herman Liebaers was the first Fleming to become "Marshal of the Royal Household".
