Luc Montreuil

Luc Montreuil is a politician in the city of Gatineau, Quebec, Canada. He is the current councillor for the Masson-Angers District in the city's end.

Biography

Montreuil was the mayor of the former municipality of Masson-Angers before his entry to Gatineau's City Council in 2002 as councillor of the Masson-Angers sector following its merger with four other sectors.

Montreuil was opposed to the amalgamation process when the Parti Québécois provincial government introduced Bill 170 which forced the merger of several municipalities to form large cities on January 1, 2002. When the provincial Liberal government under Jean Charest announced that sectors could demerge from cities, Montreuil form a pro-deamalgamation movement. On June 20, 2004, Masson-Angers appeared to have won a referendum by two votes but a pro-amalgamation movement requested a recount which later annulled the de-merger by 15 votes as it required 35% of the sector's eligible voters in order for a de-merger to succeed. After the referendum, Montreuil vowed that he will still fight for the retreat of Masson-Angers from the city of Gatineau. While stating his opposition to the new city of Gatineau, he voted against several city budgets and projects while criticizing the administration's for not developing sufficiently his sector with various and adequate services. Other councillors criticized him for trying to neglect the population and trying to become maire of Masson-Angers once again. In the 2005 municipal elections, Montreuil won the election against two opponents who were in favor of the amalgamation. Since the election, Montreuil has been less critical of the city and the Council and had voted in favor of the 2006-2007 budget in December but still have not abandoned his battle against the referendum's results and project to remove Masson-Angers from the city. He is a member of the city's public safety Commission and had often voice concerns about speeding in municipal streets.
