Peter Cooper (born August 1960, Salisbury, UK) is a professional journalist, gold investor and writer living in Dubai and was a shareholder in the successful dot-com publisher www.ameinfo.com sold to Emap plc in 2006. His Financial Blog is http://www.arabianmoney.net.
He left an 11-year career in London business publishing to become the launch editor of Gulf Business magazine in 1996, and returned briefly in 1999 to write his first book Building Relationships, The History of Bovis 1885-2000.
On a round-the-world trip in late 1999 he noted the success of a financial website in Australia and came back to Dubai to promote the idea, meeting his Danish business partners Klaus Lovgreen and Lars Nielsen in spring 2000 who had already established www.ameinfo.com as a press release and directory website.
This became the platform for a wider news and business information website that attracted HSBC Private Equity Middle East as a significant shareholder in March 2005. In July 2006 the website was wholey acquired by Emap plc.
Cooper continues to write on Middle East business affairs, local real estate and investments. He owns a house in Dubai and travelled the world with his wife Svetlana in 2007. In 2008 he became a columnist for the Emirates Business 24/7 daily business newspaper owned by the Dubai Government, and will publish his second book later in the year.
He studied politics, philosophy and economics at Trinity College, Oxford University; and was chairman of the Oxford Student Liberal Society during the same term that William Hague was president of the Oxford University Conservative Association; he also met Vladimir Putin in Moscow on a student exchange visit.
In France Cooper studied the language in Tours and La Rochelle before becoming an administrative trainee in the Development Department of the European Commission in Brussels.
