Newcastle-on-Tyne , England, Maddison attended theUniversity of Cambridge as an undergraduate. After attendingMcGill University andJohns Hopkins University as a graduate student, he decided not to pursue a Ph.D. and returned to theUnited Kingdom to teach for a year at theUniversity of St. Andrews . In 1953, he joined the Organisation for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC), and afterwards became Head of the OEEC Economics Division. In 1963, when the OEEC became theOrganisation for Economic Co-operation and Development , Maddison became Assistant Director of the Economic Development Division. Soon thereafter, he left the OECD, and spent the next 15 years in a series of consulting appointments during which he returned to the OECD for four years. In 1978, he joinedGroningen University and remained there until his retirement. He is the author of many works of historical economic analysis, including "" and several other reference books on the same topic.Angus Maddison received a royal decoration as Commander in the Netherlands
