The South Atlantic United States form one of the nine
Census Bureau Division s within theUnited States that are recognized by theUnited States Census Bureau .This division includes eight states and one district;
Delaware ,Florida , Georgia,Maryland ,North Carolina ,South Carolina ,Virginia ,West Virginia , and theDistrict of Columbia [http://www.census.gov/geo/www/us_regdiv.pdf] . Together with theEast South Central States (Alabama ,Kentucky ,Mississippi andTennessee ) and theWest South Central States (Arkansas ,Louisiana ,Oklahoma andTexas ), the South Atlantic States constitute theUnited States Census Bureau 's broaderCensus Bureau Region of the South (the other three regions being the Northeast,Midwest and West, all of which have two divisions).Most of the area covered by the South Atlantic United States comprises the
New South , one of the nine "moral regions" into which theUnited States is divided in the 1991 non-fiction book "The Day America Told The Truth ", with the rest of the South being placed in a different moral region, that of Old Dixie. Some parts ofVirginia ,West Virginia , andMaryland , along with theDistrict of Columbia , are considered to be a part ofMetropolis , with the northern panhandle ofWest Virginia being classified in theRust Belt .
