Spixie

Spixie is a relatively new term in Ecclesiastical circles. It refers, possibly disparagingly, to the Society of St Pius X. It draws on the organisation's initials SSPX. Hence SPiXie- an adherent of the SSPX. The term is used mostly by sedevacantists who believe there is currently no Pope or that Benedict XVI is not the true pope.

The expression was thought to originate circa 2000, in Australia- where there is a considerable sedevacantist base although some sociologists attribute the origins to South African sedevacantists.

Spixie has travelled the linguistic route to Canada and the US - the latter containing the highest per capita sedevacantist population. The Recusants in England have even been known to use this term, hence its almost universal acceptance seems apparent.

A notable public usage was in an article online. In Don Trimm's opinion piece he questioned, "Why can't these spixies see that his heresies make Benedict XVI an antipope?" Another reference was in a satirical piece, to the tune of, "Dixieland," titled, "Spixieland."

The SSPX members and Lefebvrist followers seem mostly oblivious to this term, given its usage has been mostly restricted to non-Lefebvrist circles. Most Catholics hope that any Spixies who become aware of this term, don't get offended but realize that it is to be expected that they be allotted some nickname.

Some non-SSPX traditionalists in communion with Benedict XVI refer to SSPX members as "Pixies".
