Controversy

In 2002, an article in "The Sydney Morning Herald" claimed that Obeid was involved in corrupt conduct in the Oasis development project in Liverpool. The report was later repeated on the ABC Radio. Obeid sued both media outlets for defamation and was awarded compensation of $162,000 and $150,000 respectively. In 2004, Obeid was criticised for visiting Lebanon on business and political matters while parliament was sitting. Furthermore his niece in Australia, Janette Obeid, claimed she feared for her own safety after threats from Eddie Obeid.
