Academic career
After graduating from the National Gymnasium in Sigmaringen in 1956, Lehmann studied
philosophy andtheology at the "Albert Ludwigs Universität " inFreiburg and the "Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum " inRome . Lehman earned his Ph.D from thePontifical Gregorian University in 1962. He was ordained by CardinalJulius Döpfner in Rome on10 October 1963 . From 1964 to 1967 he was a research assistane toKarl Rahner at theLudwig Maximilian University of Munich ; in 1967 he earned his second doctorate from the Pontifical Gregorian University, in theology. Lehmann became aprofessor at the "Johannes-Gutenberg Universität " in 1968; from 1971 until 1983 he taught Ecumenical and Dogmatic Theology at the "Albert Ludwigs Universität".infobox cardinalstyles
