Roberto Garcia Cortez

Roberto Garcia Cortez

Roberto Garcia Cortez, (born on January 29, 1975 in San Pedro, CA), was a professional boxer who trained at La Colonia Boxing Club in Oxnard, California, where he grew up and still resides.

Professional career

Known as "Grandpa", Garcia turned pro in 1992 and began his career on a torrid winning streak and captured the Vacant IBF Super Featherweight Title in 1998 with a decision win over Harold Warren. He defended the twice and quickly became a highly regarded champion, but lost the belt in an upset loss to rising phenom Diego Corrales via a devastating TKO. Garcia never regained his former stature after the loss, and in his next fight was TKO'd by Ben Tackie, a knockout deemed Knockout of the Year by Ring Magazine in 2000.

In 2001 he landed a shot at another title, the WBA Super Featherweight Title, against champion Joel Casamayor. Casamayor won via TKO, and Garcia retired shortly after the loss.
