Rewa (Hindi:रीवा) is a town in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is the administrative center of Rewa District and Rewa Division, and was formerly the capital of the princely state of Rewa and former state of Vindhya Pradesh in central India. The town lies about 210 km (131 mi) south of the city of Allahabad, India. Rewa derives its name from another name for Narmada River.

History

In the 13th century AD, the Baghels who are belived to be originated from Solanki or Chalukya clan from Gujarat came to this area and ruled from Bandhavgarh under the first ruler Raja Vyaghradev. In the mid 1550s, Raja Ramachandra Singh Baghela maintained a musically talented court, including the legendary Tansen. In 1617, Maharaja Vikramaditya Singh moved his capital to Rewa. Maharaja Martand Singh was the last ruler of Rewa who acceded to the Union of India after the country became independent.

Birbal was born in Sidhi District of Rewa Kingdom. The Emperor Sher Shah Suri, died fighting with Ruler of Rewa Vir Singh at Fort of Kalinjar.

Mohammed Jalaluddin Akbar, or Akbar The Great grew up in Rewa after his father, Humayun, was driven in excile. Akbar received same education and upbringing that prince Ram Singh received. Maharaja Ramchandra Singh and Akbar stayed friends. Two of the Navratnas of Akbar, Tansen and Birbal(original name Mahesh Das.) were sent from Rewa by Maharaja Ramchandra Singh once Akbar became the Emperor of India.

Rewa is also famous for its white tigers, the first one, nick-named Mohan, was caught in Rewa.

Sitar Virtuoso Ravi Shankar Sharma studied music from Alauddin Khan of Maiher, also in Rewa.

Geography

Rewa is located at coord|24.53|N|81.3|E| [ [http://www.fallingrain.com/world/IN/35/Rewa.html Falling Rain Genomics, Inc - Rewa] ] . It has an average elevation of 275 metres (902 feet).

Historical, the Rewa region was divided into two well-defined portions. The northern and smaller division was the plateau lying between the Kaimur range of hills and that portion of the Vindhya Range known as Binjh, which overlook the valley of the Ganges. This plateau was for the most part cultivated and well peopled; two rich harvests were generally obtained every year. Water was generally plentiful; the country is full of large tanks and reservoirs, which however were not used for irrigation: that purpose was met by "bunds" or mounds of earth raised at the lower ends of sloping fields to retain the rain water for some time after the monsoon rains cease. The country to the south of the Kaimur hills comprised the largest portion of the state. Cultivation here was restricted to the valley between the hills and the Son River.

The principal river is the Son, which flows through the state in a northeasterly direction into Mirzapur District. Another important river was the Tons; neither is navigable. The annual rainfall averages about 41 in.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Rewa had a population of about 400,000. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Rewa has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 78%, and female literacy is 64%. In Rewa, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Tiger trivia

* The forests surrounding Rewa are renowned for their tiger population; the tiger sanctuary of Bandhavgarh is located there.
* Together with Kanha Kisli, the Bandhavgarh forests are believed to be the setting for Rudyard Kipling's "The Jungle Book".
* Most white tigers in captivity today are descendants of a white cub captured in Rewa in the 1950s.

Industry

As this is a limestone belt and coal is found in the nearby districts of Shahdol,Umaria,Sidhi and Singrauli,Various cement factories are nearby including Jaypee group in Naubasta,Bela(dist. Satna) and Bhagwar(dist.Sidhi) and The JAYPEE group has made a township known as Jaypee Nagar in Rewa.

Asia's biggest cement factory Prism cement (prev. Rasi Cement) produces near Rewa at Satna Distt.

Education

Jyoti senior secondary school is one among best school of M.P. Batch 2001-2002 of this school is a best batch ever in jyoti school's history.

Sainik School is also located in Rewa. It is the only Sainik School in the state. Sainik Schools are located through out India (one in each state) that train students to become future military officers.

Central Academy Senior Secondary School , Rewa (M.P.) islocated in the heart of the city about 400 meters away from NH-7 Near the NCC office. The Attractive School Building is build on Govt. Allotted Nazul land. In front of school, there is an open Parade Ground (About 6 Acres Land) of the NCC (Ministry of Defence, Govt. Of India.). The School Runs The Co-Educational Classes From Nursery, Kg, Std. I to XII under the Central Academy Educational Society.

Rewa has a University called Awadhesh Pratap Singh Vishvavidalaya (A.P.S University). It also has a government Engineering college, Shyam Shah Singh Medical College, Agriculture college, Ayurvedic Medical College, and Sanskrit College.

There are four degree colleges: Model Science College, Thakur Ranmat Singh College, Janta College, and Girls Degree college that have degrees up to Ph.D.

There are university classes in Computer Sciences, BBA, and MBA.
