"Powelliphanta lignaria johnstoni", known as one of the amber snails, is a subspecies of large, carnivorous land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusc in the family Rhytididae.

Distribution

This subspecies is endemic to the South Island of New Zealand. It is only found in a block of mountainous coastal country, isolated by the sea to the west, and by the Mokihinui and Ngakawau rivers.

hell description

The shell has conspicuous spirally banded lines in dark reddish-brown upon a light reddish-brown ground above, and a yellowish-olive ground on the under surface. There are no axial stripes.

The shell diameter is up to 45 mm, and height up to 25 mm.

Conservation status

"Powelliphanta lignaria johnstoni" is classified by the New Zealand Department of Conservation as being "Nationally Endangered".
