Brandendamm was a major crossing of the
Oder in oldBrandenburg . Upon it grew the moderntown s ofFrankfurt (Oder) , inGermany , andSlubice , inPoland .The name is derived from "Branden", the name of the
Wendish inhabitants of what is now the German "Bundesländer" ofBrandenburg andSaxony-Anhalt , and "damm", the word for a causeway across lakes and swamp in the sandy heathlands ofPrussia .
