Notable Productions

The first of Medoff's plays to receive a New York City staging, it opened on December 6, 1973 at off-Broadway's Eastside Playhouse, where it ran for 302 performances. The cast, directed by Kenneth Frankel, included Kevin Conway and Brad Dourif. Medoff won the Village Voice's Obie Award for Distinguished Play.

The 1979 film version, adapted by Medoff and directed by Milton Katselas, starred Marjoe Gortner, Candy Clark, Lee Grant, Hal Linden, Peter Firth, Pat Hingle, Audra Lindley, and Anne Ramsey.

This play is a favorite among colleges throughout America, along with Medoff's more famous work, "Children of a Lesser God".

A successful high school version of this play was performed in Illinois in 2008. The cast, from Community West High School (Normal), participated in IHSA Drama & Group Interpretation, where they took fourth place out of roughly seventy total sectional competitors, and twelve state finalists. The cast members included Nathan Stark as Teddy, Fletcher Bohne as Stephen, Kayla Pulliam as Angel, Kevin Helenthal as Lyle, Kyle Ratcliffe as Richard, Courtney Ohler as Clarisse, Hannah Summers as Cheryl, and Stephen Duncan as Clark. The show was directed by Lori Adams, acting professor at Illinois State University.
