Hampton Loade Ferry

Hampton Loade Ferry

Hampton Loade Ferry is a current operated pedestrian chain ferry, sometimes called a reaction ferry, which links the villages of Hampton Loade and Hampton across the River Severn in the English county of Shropshire. The crossing has been in use for around 400 years, and may even have provided a route across the Severn during the Middle Ages.cite web | title = Hamton Loade Ferry complete | publisher = BBC | url = http://www.bbc.co.uk/shropshire/features/2004/01/hampton_loade_ferry.shtml | accessdate = December 29 | accessyear = 2006]

In 2004, a new ferry boat was built by the nearby Ironbridge Gorge Museum to the design of the previous boat, which had seen 38 years service. The new craft is of wooden construction, measures 20 feet by 9 feet, and carries up to 12 passengers.cite web | title = Hamton Loade Ferry complete | publisher = BBC | url = http://www.bbc.co.uk/shropshire/features/2004/01/hampton_loade_ferry.shtml | accessdate = December 29 | accessyear = 2006] cite web | title = Unique Hampton Loade ferry carries passengers once more | publisher = The Countryside Agency | url = http://www.countryside.gov.uk/LAR/Regions/WestMidlands/whoWeAre/pressReleases/hamptonloade.asp | accessdate = December 31 | accessyear = 2006 ]

Hampton Loade Ferry should not be mistaken for the Hampton Ferry, a rather similar passenger only chain ferry near the town of Evesham in the county of Worcestershire.
