Canadian Mathematical Society

The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is an association of professional mathematicians dedicated to the interests of mathematical research and education in Canada.

It was originally conceived in June 1945 as the "Canadian Mathematical Congress". A name change was debated for many years; ultimately, a new name was adopted in 1979, upon its incorporation as a non-profit charitable organization.

Publications

The main publication of the CMS is the Canadian Journal of Mathematics.

Other publications:

*Canadian Mathematical Bulletin
*Crux Mathematicorum with Mathematical Mayhem

Conferences

The CMS, through its [http://www.cms.math.ca/Students/ Student Committee] , sponsors the bilingual Canadian Undergraduate Mathematics Conference, held each summer for Canadian undergraduates interested in any area of mathematics. Students may each speak for up to fifty minutes on topics of their choice. The 11th and 12th meetings were held at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, respectively. In particular the Queen's conference attracted an unprecedented 150 participants from across the country. The 13th meeting was held in summer 2006 at McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, which was also the location of the original conference.

Awards

The CMS annually awards the following prices
*Jeffery-Williams Prize to recognize mathematicians who have made outstanding contributions to mathematical research.
*Adrien Pouliot Award for contributions to mathematical education in Canada.
*Krieger-Nelson Prizeis presented in recognition of an outstanding female in mathematics.
*Coxeter–James Prize to recognize young mathematicians who have made outstanding contributions to mathematical research.
