St. Viator School is a Catholic school, located in Las Vegas, Nevada. It includes grades PreK-8. There are two classes per grade, and K-8 have full day classes. This school belongs to the St. Viator Parish, which belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Las Vegas, NV.

History

The Clerics of St. Viator have moved to Las Vegas, NV in the 1960s to teach the Catholic youth. St. Viator School was established in 1965. They were the main teachers at St. Viator School and Bishop Gorman High School, the only Catholic high school in Nevada.

Faculty

St. Viator School has approximately 44 staff members who are teachers in a variety of fields, including art, music, physical education, and many others. There are also many teacher aides who assist teachers in their jobs. Much of them have either a bachelors or masters degrees. They are certified teachers who are certified by the State of Nevada. All of them institute a level of religion in their lives. The principal is Kathleen Daulton.

Education

St. Viator School has an excellent education program. Its program starts in Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K) with half day classes. By Kindergarten students attend full-day classes. This continues to eighth grade. In Kindergarten they start on their basic education, which includes religion.

By first grade they constitute a basic program that continues to third grade. Here they have only one teacher and learn all the basic subjects on a small scale. They learn about many things that matter in life.

In the intermediate level—Grades 4 and 5—the students learn how to take notes and prepare for Junior High. In the fourth grade students receive their first science and social studies textbooks.

By the fifth grade, the students change classes for either Science or Social Studies. They start to do interactive science activities. The students also do D.A.R.E., a program which educates them about the effects of drugs, alcohol, and smoking. Their classes are taking what they learned in previous grades to a level where they prepare for Junior High.

In Junior High, the students begin to switch classes. They receive their first lockers and they follow a different schedule every day. They have different teachers for English/Spelling/Spanish, Science, Computer Science, Religion, Social Studies, Reading, Math, Physical Education, and Conflict Resolution/Band/Tribe/Study Skills. All these subjects are taught every day except Computer Science, Physical Education, and Conflict Resolution/Band/Tribe/Study Skills.

Many students go to Bishop Gorman High School after graduation.

Extra-Curricular activities

Students of certain grades also go on multiple field trips throughout the school year for educational purposes. In 2008, the sixth graders went to a new science camp, known as Camp Pali Institute. The elementary school kids go on other, nearby trips.
