George Aloysius Carrell , S.J., was a rector at Xavier University inCincinnati, Ohio and the firstBishop ofCovington, Kentucky .Early life
Carrell was born on
June 13 ,1803 inPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania . Carrell was ordained apriest onDecember 20 ,1857 in Philadelphia. He joined the Jesuits in 1835. His first position in education was president ofSaint Louis University in1843 . He was transferred to Cincinnati in1847 and assigned to a preparatory school, becoming its president two years later. In1851 Father Carrell was made the rector of Xavier University, a position he would hold until he was made a bishop.First Bishop of Covington
Father Carrell was named as the first bishop of the newly-created Diocese of Covington on
July 29 ,1853 byPope Pius IX . Bishop Carrell was installed by Archbishop John Baptist Purcell of Cincinnati onNovember 1 ,1853 . Bishop Carrell served as bishop until his death onSeptember 25 ,1868 .External links
