Catterall & Swarbrick Brewery

Catterall & Swarbrick Brewery was established in Poulton-le-Fylde, England in 1880. In Barrett's directory for 1885 its address was given as Queen's Brewery, Queens Square, Poulton. In 1889 this directory also listed Richardson's Newton Springs Brewery. This was taken over by C&S in 1890 and renamed Queen's Brewery.

On Friday 6 July 1894 the Blackpool Gazette news said a limited liability company was to be formed of Messrs Catterall & Swarbrick Brewery. Among its directors were to be William Catterall of Breck Road Poulton; John Swarbrick of Tower Lodge, Poulton and Tom Lockwood of The Golden Ball Hotel Poulton.

Among the licensed houses they supplied were the Star Inn, Blackpool, the Saddle Inn at Marton and the Railway Hotel, Poulton.

As the company progressed they purchased more pubs and hotels in Blackpool and the Fylde.In the 1927 a new brewery was built on Talbot Road, Blackpool. They then built pubs further a field in Garstang, Cumberland and Scotland. There is a reference to the Golden Ball public house in Garstang in the 1891 census of England with the publican at the time being William Dewhurst who was born about 1822.

In the 1960s Bass Charrington took over the company, and in 1974 the factory ceased brewing.

There are still traces of the initials C&S to be found in the area on many licensed houses.

The Talbot Road brewery was demolished in 2000 and is now a car park with two access roads being named; Catterall Lane and Swarbrick Lane.
