This is a list of characters appearing in the Spyro the Dragon video game series.

Characters

pyro the Dragon

:The title character, a young purple dragon who serves as the series Main character.Spyro was one of the youngest dragons when he began his quest to save the worlds from Gnasty Gnorc. He is mischievous and irresponsible, but when the innocent are threatened, he suddenly develops a sense of duty. Spyro's bravery and determination have helped him save friends and defeat the likes of Gnasty Gnorc, Ripto, The Sorceress, Grendor, Red, and many others to restore order to the realms. Because of his heroic deeds, he is the main one called to face a challenge. He's a calm and generally nice guy, but doesn't mind kicking butt every once in a while.

parx

Spyro's constant companion, Sparx serves as an embodiment of the player's health meter and also assists in collecting nearby items. Sparx was also a playable character in "Year of the Dragon", "Season of Ice", and "A Hero's Tail", his levels featuring gameplay similar to "Gauntlet" and various rail shooter games. In "" he is "in charge" of all of the speedway levels, asking Spyro through his Kazoo voice, what Spyro wants to do next.

Agent 9

This monkey doesn't take any nonsense, and when an enemy gets him angry (or even if he sees one), a blast of his powerful raygun awaits. He talks in a very fast, hyperactive mad accent.

Bentley

A yeti introduced in "Year of the Dragon", who speaks like a theasaurus but fights with a club made of ice. Bentley later made a cameo appearance in "A Hero's Tail".

Bianca

A young anthropomorphic rabbit introduced in "Year of the Dragon" as an apprentice to the Sorceress, shown wearing a dark hooded cloak. Bianca defected to Spyro's cause within the same game, and appeared in later games to assist Spyro. Bianca appears to have strong feelings for Hunter which can be seen at the end of "Year of the Dragon" when they kiss on top of the castle in the Evening Lake home.

Blink

A young mole and the Professor's nephew, Blink appeared in "A Hero's Tail" and "Shadow Legacy".

Dragon Elders

A group of adult anthropomorphic dragons and the apparent governing body over the series's Dragon Realms, who teach Spyro various new skills and gameplay abilities. A specific group of five elders were named in "A Hero's Tail" and "Shadow Legacy".

Elora

A faun who appeared primarily in "Ripto's Rage!" ("Gateway to Glimmer"), Elora was a resident of Avalar who assisted Spyro in the fight against Ripto and a cameo appearance at the end of Year of The Dragon.

Hunter

A cool cheetah who first appeared in "Ripto's Rage!" to help train (and sometimes challenge) Spyro with various tasks. While he's a loyal friend and marginally knowledgeable with basic tasks, he seems to have trouble grasping the severity of Spyro's mission and can be relatively naive and gullible, leading him to being captured or tricked easily. Hunter developed a crush on Bianca in "Year of the Dragon", And in the same game, had 4 playable minigames of his own, one in each the speedway level, He was a fully playable character in two levels of "A Hero's Tail". Like his name implies, he is a very skilled bow and arrow hunter, and is strong and agile enough to hold his own in a fight if need be. He often prides himself in him applying his species' speed to everything he does, and expresses minor jealousy or pride when Spyro beats him at something, respectfully. A figure similar to Hunter appears later in ', revealing that he may make an appearance in the third installment of "The Legend of Spyro" trilogy, and indeed is later confirmed to make an appearance in the upcoming game; ', to be voiced by Blair Underwood.

gt. Byrd

An anthropomorphic penguin introduced in "Year of the Dragon", Sgt. Byrd is a soldier armed with various weapons (such as a rocket launcher), and able to fly (attributed to being raised by hummingbirds). Sgt. Byrd was also playable in "Attack of the Rhynocs", in missions that involved rescuing his fellow soldiers; he also appeared in "A Hero's Tail" for flying missions.

heila

A female kangaroo who first appeared in "Year of the Dragon", she appears to be neighbors with goats. Sheila's gameplay focused on her jumping ability, she can jump, do a double jump and do a super jump. She can also kick with her feet and do a stomp move similar to Spyro's headbash move. Sheila also made a cameo appearance in "Attack of the Rhynocs". Contrasting to her appearance, she speaks with a smooth Australian accent.

The Professor

An anthropomorphic mole who first appeared in "Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage", He Brought Ripto And Spyro to Avalar and he assists Spyro by creating various devices and gadgets. He Also made an appearance in "Spyro: Year Of The Dragon", helping Agent 9 in his level. It appears that he entered Agent 9's labs after he tried to use his portal to get to the dragon realms, but the coordinates were out of date, sending him to the "forgotton worlds" instead, and hence, finding Agent 9 Labs.

Recurring side characters

Ember

A small pink dragon that appeared in "A Hero's Tail", where she had a huge crush on Spyro and hoped to marry him one day, yet she fails to see that Spyro doesn't feel the same about her. In "A Hero's Tail", her character model could be unlocked for viewing as well as actual gameplay. She later falls in love with Bandit the Armadillo from Cliff Town in "Shadow Legacy", despite how the dragons blame the armadillos for some of their own problems.

Flame

A young, vivid red dragon that appeared in "A Hero's Tail" and "Shadow Legacy", much like Ember. His character model could also be unlocked view viewing and gameplay in "A Hero's Tail".

Moneybags

An snobbish anthropomorphic bear with a lust for gems, Moneybags first appeared in "Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!" and also appeared in "Spyro: Year Of The Dragon" and "Spyro: Enter The Dragonfly", where he impeded Spyro's progress, opening up new passages, released unlockable characters, or granting new abilities for Spyro for "a small fee".Moneybags also appeared in "A Hero's Tail" and "Shadow Legacy", but with a different characterization, serving as a shopkeeper from which the player could purchase various items.

Zoe

A fairy who first appeared in "Ripto's Rage!", offering Spyro advice and serving as checkpoints throughout the various levels. However, in "Spyro the Dragon", faires that appear above the areas where Spyro freedthe dragons imprisoned in crystal could be an early rendering of Zoe.

Antagonists

The Spyro series has seen a wide array of antagonists, with each game generally centered around a single villain which Spyro sets out to defeat. As such, very few enemies or antagonists have appeared in more than one game in the series.

Gnasty Gnorc

The main antagonist in the first Spyro game, "Spyro the Dragon", where he imprisoned all dragons (except for Spyro) in crystal and stole the dragon's treasure and used magic to turn them into monsters. Spyro fought against Gnasty Gnorc's minions (called 'Gnorcs', a race of gnome / orc hybrids), eventually reaching Gnasty Gnorc's home world, where he confronted and defeated him.

:Gnasty Gnorc later appeared as in "A Hero's Tail" as a level boss and one of Red's minions himself. He somehow had bad memory since he forgot that Spyro defeated him.

Grendor

The main antagonist in "Spyro: Season of Ice" for the GBA, originally a Rhynoc working for the Sorceress in "Year of the Dragon", who captured fairies in ice in order to reverse a spell that caused him to have two heads.

Ripto

The title villain of "", Ripto is a diminuative but powerful reptilian sorcerer with a purple cape and a single horn on his forehead. Upon being accidentally transported to the realm of Avalar, he announces that he will be taking it over due to the fact that no dragons were native to the area. After an initial confrontation with Spyro and Avalar's residents, he fled to various locales within Avalar; Spyro pursued and confronted Ripto's two minions, Crush and Gulp, and eventually confronted Ripto himself, winning the battle using the assistance of "Power orbs" created by The Professor.

Despite his sound defeat at the end of "Ripto's Rage!", Ripto became a recurring villain in the Spyro series, appearing as the main antagonist again in "". He also appeared in "Season of Flame", "Attack of the Rhynocs", and even the crossover title "Spyro Orange" and "Crash Purple". These reacurences made him the most commen villian in the franchise, as well as making him the known nemesis of Spyro until 2006's "New beginning" put the Dark-Master on centre-stage.

He seems to be based on the witch Luna from "Thunder Cats" right down to riding on a dinosaur like creature.

The Sorcerer

The primary antagonist of "". A wizard wearing a hooded black cloak who sought to control the "Shadow Realm" and trap residents of the Dragon Realms and other locales within. The Sorcerer appeared several times throughout the game as a silent observer of Spyro's feats, teleporting away upon notice, and revealed his true identity only at the end when Spyro confronted and battled him. The Sorcerer was defeated, but not destroyed; he fled the realms and Spyro assumed he would later return.

The Sorceress

The primary antagonist in "Year of the Dragon", an anthropomorphic dinopotamus who sent her apprentice, Bianca, to the Dragon Realms to steal dragon eggs, for use in a spell to assure her continued immortality. Bianca later betrayed the Sorceress and helped Spyro to confront the Sorceress, where she was defeated twice.

Red the Evil Dragon

The main antagonist of , a huge, anthropomorphic red dragon, who used magical Dark Gems to corrupt the Dragon Worlds. He was a Dragon Elder, but became power-crazed, and was banished by the Dragon Elders for attempting to overthrow their leader. In his shameful exile, he set up home in an active volcano, where he discovered huge deposits of corrupting Dark Gems, which could drain the life force of healthy plants and animals, and make the world a very evil place, in which Red decided would be the perfect place for him to rule unquestioned. With his new found power, he allied with Gnasty Gnorc and Ineptune (Evil Queen of the Ocean), and then attempted to take over the world again, this time using Gnasty's army of Gnorcs.

Red is of an immence height, and has blood-red scales, and boasts jagged purple spines and horns on his head and down his back, which symbolise the corruption the Dark Gems have brought upon him. He like other Dragon Elders carries a magical staff, but instead of a Light Gem as its source of power, Red's has a Dark Gem, with which he commands all of the other's to do his bidding. He appears to be in full contol of the Gnorc army as well, as when Gnasty is defeated by Spyro, they still mindlessly serve him - and even let themselves be turned into robots in Red's Laboratory; with the forced work of the captured Professor; under Red's volcanic lair. Red was finally defeated by Spyro after the Professor accidentally changed him into a huge robot, and the Professor shrunk him down to the size of a mouse, and claimed that the now tiny, un-dangerous; (but no less evil) Red; would be useful in his own lab, claiming him to be of a more "manageable size".

"The Legend of Spyro" series

"" served as a reboot of the series, discarding the original storyline entirely. The only characters from the original continuity to appear in "A New Beginning" are Spyro and Sparx, both having different personalities and looking entirely changed from their original versions. A figure looking like Hunter appears in "The Eternal Night", so there is speculation that he may be in the next game.

Protagonists

Cynder

Cynder (voiced by Cree Summer in "A New Beginning", Mae Whitman in "The Eternal Night", and Christina Ricci in "Dawn of the Dragon") was once a large, powerful black dragon who served as the primary antagonist in "The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning". Initially, she came from the same brood of eggs as Spyro, and in truth the same size and age as him. As an egg she was seized by the Dark Master's forces and she was raised by them; under the influence of the Dark Master's power, Cynder grew to adult size and strength quickly and was then able to defeat and capture the Dragon Guardians, collecting their power in the form of crystals and taking them to Convexity in order to free the Dark Master from imprisonment. After her defeat, Cynder returned to her original size and strength and was safely returned to the Dragon Temple.

In "The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night", Cynder runs away from the Dragon Temple in the middle of the night. When Spyro confronts her, she tells him she's off to find her own place in the world, still blaming herself for what had happened. Spyro later encounters her in an arena on a pirate ship after being captured, and although they are ordered to fight, Cynder states that she only wants to buy time until they can both escape. Just then, the pirate ship is attacked by Gaul's forces, and Cynder is taken captive. Gaul tells her that the Dark Master will either take her back for being such a faithful servant, or he'll kill her. It is later revealed that Gaul was the one who took her egg to begin with. When Spyro confronts Gaul, he orders Cynder to kill him, though Cynder fakes the fight so she can try and get Gaul's staff. After Spyro's battle with Gaul, Cynder saves Spyro from the Dark Master's clutches. She becomes frozen in time with Spyro and Sparx when Spyro uses his powers to save them all. Hopefully, they will be able to return to the world they belong in, reunite with the four dragon guardians, and the Chronicler, and eventually defeat the Dark Master, at last. Spyro also shows a bit of some feelings for the small black dragon seeing as how he constantly pursued danger in order to save her in "The Eternal Night". In "Dawn of the Dragon", she teams up with Sparx and Spyro to defeat her former master once and for all.

Cyril

Cyril is a blue dragon and a master of ice; a wise but prideful dragon and the second rescued from Cynder's forces. Spyro rescues him from the Shrine god in Tall Plains where he finds the Atlawa Tribe and a loner called Kane who doesn't like Spyro until he defeats the God. He teaches Spyro the art of Ice Breath. He's voiced by Jeff Bennett in both games.

Ignitus

Ignitus is a red dragon, and a master of fire, who is the first Guardian Spyro encounters and becomes the closest to him; he is the one who sends Spyro off to locate the other three Guardians. Ignitus, unlike the other guardians, was not captured by Cynder, and spent his time before the events of the game in hiding until Spyro found him. Upon his return to the Dragon Temple, he teaches Spyro the art of Fire Breath.

After Spyro frees Terrador at Munition's Forge, Cynder chases him until she is stopped by Ignitus, who is then captured. After a final discussion with the remaining guardians, Spyro ventured to her lair and rescued him; however, Cynder escaped with the last of the powered crystals, thus triggering the final confrontation in Convexity. He's voiced by Gary Oldman in both games.

parx

In this continuity, Sparx is Spyro's foster brother. With Spyro having a separate health bar, Sparx serves primarily as a travelling companion. In this continuity, Sparx's role has been reduced to serving as the series' comic relief, often giving out humourous dialogue and sarcastic remarks. Spyro often serves as the subject of Sparx's jokes, of which Spyro often retaliates. Despite this, he is still willing to help Spyro no matter what happens. Further proof of his loyalty to Spyro can be seen in "The Eternal Night", where he distracts several enemies to protect Spyro after he falls unconscious in the middle of a forest. He also has an extreme distrust for Cynder and is not hesitant to admit it. He's voiced by David Spade in "A New Beginning", Billy West in "The Eternal Night", and Wayne Brady in" Dawn of the Dragon".

pyro the Dragon

The main protagonist, Spyro is the purple dragon that prophecies say will direct the fate of his era. In this continuity, Spyro is young and compassionate for others and he is always willing to help them no matter what happens. Spyro doesn't ask for rewards and is just happy to be a big help to those in danger. He even saves Cynder from being trapped inside the Dark Master's portal when it started sucking in the surrounding environment after her defeat. After saving Cynder, Spyro seems to have developed feelings for the black dragon, driving him throughout most of his trials in "The Eternal Night". At one point in the series, he temporarily becomes a Dark Dragon after falling under the Dark Master's influence, though he is saved by Cynder. He's voiced by Elijah Wood in both games.

Terrador

A battle-scarred warrior, and a master of Earth. Terrador is the most militant guardian. Dedicated and focused on practical art of battle, he is straight forward and agenda-less. He judges everyone, Spyro included, not by looks or color, or species but how well they fight. He respects Spyro as a fellow warrior. There is an elegant - if brutal - simplicity in philosophy and speech. He's voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson in both games.

The Chronicler

The Chronicler is the new dragon elder in "". He is over 1000 years old and his power is to move objects with his mind. He also knows the past, present, and bits of the future of every dragon ever born. He helps Spyro reawaken his powers through a series of dreams and visions. He is grayish and silveryalso wears a dark gray robe with scrolls out his back pockets. He looks like a 'Dragon-Wizard'. He's voiced by Martin Jarvis.

Volteer

Volteer is a yellow dragon of electricity, he is very smart and static, the first dragon rescued from Cynder's forces; He teaches Spyro the art of Electricity Breath. He's voiced by Corey Burton in both games.

Hunter of Avalar

"Hunter of Avalar" is a figure similar to Hunter (who first appeared in ), who appears at the end of '. He is speculated to be the same character. More commonly known as "Hunter of Avalar", he is just like in , a cheetah. However, in ', he appears to be a bowman who has been captured on the pirate's ship. He is only seen at the end when Spyro is frozen in time with Sparx and Cynder, but he had written a letter to Spyro earlier whilst on the ship, explaining that he knew about Spyro's powers and hoped they would someday meet.

ide characters

Flash and Nina

Flash and Nina are the biological parents of Sparx but adopted parents of Spyro. They found Spyro's egg which hatched the same day as Sparx's egg, since then they have raised Spyro as their son. Their appearance is short in "A New Beginning" and they are not seen nor mentioned in "The Eternal Night". Spyro's biological parent's have yet to have been revealed. Flash is voiced by Jeff Bennett and Nina is voiced by Vanessa Marshall.

Kane

Kane is an Atlawa and a resident of Tall Plains. For most of the plight through that stage in "A New Beginning", he appears as a loner and wanted to save his people alone. After several scenarios in the stage - including being saved from falling from a waterfall - Kane then understands the value of teamwork and became grateful for Spyro's input after the defeat of the Stone Sentinel. He's voiced by Phil LaMarr.

Exhumor

Exhumor is Mole-Yair's brother, though in comparison he generally acts more hostile to strangers. His role in "A New Beginning" is also smaller than Mole-Yair's, though his role as a guiding figure among the release of the captured Manwersmalls is still very similar. He's voiced by Corey Burton.

Mole-Yair

Mole-Yair is the leader of the Manwersmalls, a rodent-like race that takes refuge around Munitions Forge. In "A New Beginning", almost all the Manwersmalls were captured and were forced to do labor work for Cynder and her minions. He is mainly seen as a guiding figure, instructing Spyro to save them as well as his brother Exhumor in exchange for information on Terrador's location. He, like Exhumor, is distinguished with a strong French accent. Mole-Yair returns in "The Eternal Night" as a captive of the pirate ship. He gives Spyro a message from someone named Hunter of Avalar. He and the Manwersmalls are later freed by Spyro and Sparx as they try to escape from the burning ship. He's voiced by in Jeff Bennett both games.

Antagonists

The Dark Master, Malefor

The main villain of the "The Legend of Spyro" series who is officially known as the Dark Master. In "", his forces raided the Dragon Temple and stole Cynder's egg, as well as forcing all of the Dragon Guardians to flee and Ignitus to save Spyro's egg. Spyro defeated Cynder and returned her to her original form, but not before she collected enough energy to free the Dark Master.

According to The Chronicler in ', the Dark Master was the first purple dragon ever to be born. He was a gifted dragon, quickly learning all of the breaths despite not being a dragon of those types. However, he became corrupted by his own seemingly limitless power and was sealed away. It is said that he can corrupt the minds of even the strongest dragons, which can be seen in both Cynder and Spyro's cases. According to the next game sequel ', Spyro will finally face him in battle for the first time. According to the official website, his real name is Malefor, which also explains the true name of the Well of Souls; The Mountain of Malefor.

Gaul

Also known as the Ape King. Antagonist in the "" video game. He's planning to resurrect the Dark Master aka Malefor, so the Apes can get revenge on the dragon race. He is the one who led the raid on the Dragon Temple and stole Cynder's egg. He is killed by Spyro after Spyro becomes infused with Malefor's powers. He's voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson.

Pirates

In "The Eternal Night", Spyro and Sparx run into a group of dog/ape-like pirates that later capture them when they destroy one of their "attractions" and force Spyro to fight in their arena. Their leader is Skabb, who has two talking parrots named Scratch and Sniff that speak for him since he is too unintelligent to speak for himself. Sparx intensely hates the parrots but seems to hate Sniff the most. The pirates also took the Manwersmalls, Hunter of Avalar and Cynder prisoner aboard their nut sack ship. Spyro defeats Skabb and escapes the pirates' ships. Sparx comically punches Sniff knocking him out cold. Scratch is voiced by Jeff Bennett and Sniff is voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson
