- Shila of Kefar Tamarta
Shila of Kefar Tamarta (Hebrew: שילא איש כפר תמרתא) was a
Jew ishTalmud ist, anamora of the 3rd century, from theLand of Israel . In theJerusalem Talmud sources he is called only by his personal name, but in theBabylonian Talmud the name of his home inJudea is always added, in order to distinguish him from an older Babylonianamora who bore the same name.Shila was accustomed to deliver public
haggadic lectures, and he is mentioned only in connection with theAggadah ; yet he seems to have been active in the field ofHalakah also (Niddah 26a), although no halakic sayings of his have been preserved. The greater portion of hisBiblical exegesis , so far as extant, is taken from these discourses, each of which is prefaced by the formula: "R. Shila has preached" (Meg. 18a, b;Soṭah 35a;Cant. R. viii. 9). Other haggadot of his are found inMidr. Teh. toPs. lxxx. 7, andTan. ,Mishpaṭim , 8 (ed. Buber, p. 43a).Jewish Encyclopedia bibliography
