Easiest route=scrambleBanner Peak is the second tallest peak in the
Ritter Range ofCalifornia 's Sierra Nevada. The mountain is 12,936 feet (3,943 m) tall and there are a fewglaciers on its slopes. It lies within the boundaries of theAnsel Adams Wilderness ; at the foot of the peak lieGarnet Lake and the famousThousand Island Lake . Banner Peak is near the town ofMammoth Lakes ; from there, climbers can hike to the foot of the mountain where various routes, the easiest of which is a class 3, reach the summit. Other nearby lakes to the peak include Lake Catherine,Shadow Lake , andEdiza Lake .The peak was named by USGS topographer
Willard D. Johnson in 1883 for the cloud-banners streaming from its summit.References
