The Burton Awards program, now in its ninth year, is a non-profit effort run in association with the Library of Congress. The program recognizes major accomplishments in law, and is principally devoted to legal writing and research. Each year since 1999, 30 writing awards have been presented to partners in America's 1,000 largest law firms, ten awards given to Association of Legal Administrators members in special categories, and 15 writing awards presented to law school students.
Namesake
The award is named after William C. Burton, a member of the New York and Florida bars and a partner in the international law firm of D'Amato & Lynch. Burton is a former New York State Assistant Attorney General and author of the authoritative reference, Burton's Legal Thesaurus, published by McGraw Hill. Mr. Burton is the author of several articles published in the New York State Bar Association Journal. In 2003 he also co-founded the Holmes Debates which is a program to address major issues facing the nation and the judiciary.
