Elani's roots began in Kodiak, Alaska, when Chris and Jonathan picked up instruments and started writing songs in their basement, under the musical name of Alfonso.
A Few years later, after moving back to North Carolina, they continued to play under the name of Alfonso, and released two rare, self-released ep's. Other projects that the brothers were involved in included a hardcore/metal band under the moniker il Zelante, and a hip hop project called Tupence.
In 2005, Chris moved to Portland, Oregon with the sole purpose of keeping the vision going, even though Jonathan was still in North Carolina. After a collective break, the two brothers re-grouped and decided to focus all of their creative energy on a NEW project together.
This project became Elani, which is Greek for "light".
In the spring of 2006, James Wook joined elani on second guitar and that following summer Jonathan flew up to Oregon, and the trio recorded a
rock-oriented ep/demo titled "Speaking in Cursive". The collection of songs gathered a small but loyal fanbase through myspace and purevolume.The following year, Wookie parted ways with elani, and Jonathan moved out to Oregon permanently. After signing to Outgo Records, a small upstart indie out of Portland, Christopher Joel and Jonathan David wrote a slew of songs and entered the studio that July to record their Debut album....unhappy with the way the overall sound and direction of the songs that were recorded, the two brothers scrapped the entire album, left the studio and decided to start fresh, on their own.
Frustrated with the fiasco between the label and the band, the two brothers slipped under the radar for the remainder of 2007, only surfacing occasionally on myspace throughout the following months.
In the fall of 2007, the brothers started a new project called Zig Zag and the Tree and were rumored to be working on new material, none of which has appeared in recorded form yet.
December '07 to March '08 found the brothers traveling quite extensively, appearing here and there, and everywhere in between, but finally settling down in Portland where they are currently writing and playing music under various names and monikers. Newly recorded material is expected to surface throughout the Spring and Summer, but little else is known beyond that.
