2003 , the town has an estimatedpopulation of 31,832 and a density of 711.33 persons per km². The total area is 44.75 km².Rifu is known for the
Nashi Pear s it produces, including some tourist orchards where fruit can be picked from the trees. Recently,wine andcandy made from Nashi Pears have been developed in the town.Rifu is also the location of
Miyagi Stadium , which was used in the 2002 World Cup.East Japan Railway Company 's barnyard, where research and development as well as maintenance of theshinkansen trains takes place is located in Rifu.Transportation
