Alaska Interconnection

Alaska Interconnection

The Alaska Interconnection is counted as one of the three minor alternating current (AC) power grids in North America, although it actually consists of two independent grids with no interties. The other minor interconnections are the Québec Interconnection and Texas Interconnection. The two major interconnections are the Eastern Interconnection and the Western Interconnection.

All of the electric utilities within each Alaska Interconnection are electrically tied together during normal system conditions, and each operate at a synchronized frequency averaging 60Hz. The Central Alaska Interconnection reaches from the Fairbanks region to the Kenai Peninsula, and the Southeastern Alaska Interconnection covers most of the Alaska Panhandle. The Alaska Interconnections are unique among the North American interconnections because of their isolated status; neither has ties to any other interconnections.
