1887 byEmile Rossel . It is the most popular Francophone newspaper in Belgium, and considered anewspaper of record .Fact|date=July 2008Editorial stance
Compared to its centre-right Catholic competitor,
La Libre Belgique , Le Soir is seen as liberal with politically federalist leanings.Lately, Le Soir has lost a lot of its credibility in
Flanders , the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium, because the paper constantly focuses on the political situation in little Flemish municipalities surrounding Brussels. Some of their well-known editors have also left the newspaper because of Le Soir's growing anti-Flemish undertone, which severely hinders objective political journalism. One of them Charles Bricman said on the online forum of De Standaard: "There is a kind of hysteria spreading among the French-speakers. I know, the folks at Le Soir are not racists, nor Fleming haters, but (how do yo say that in Dutch), 'they're becoming crazy' (in the original text in Dutch and French: er is nu een soort hysterie die zich zeer vlug bij de Franstaligen propageert. Ik weet dat de mensen, bij Le Soir, geen bewuste racisten of 'Vlaminghaters' zijn. Maar (hoe zegt U dat in het Nederlands?), 'ils sont en train de perdre la boule'.")
Google controversy
The paper gained some notoriety on the internet after it successfully sued
Google forcopyright infringement. The case was built on the fact that Google made parts of the newspaper's website available through its search engine and through itsGoogle News service, even after the articles in question had been removed from the newspaper's website. A Belgianjudge ruled that this did not conform to Belgian regulations and ordered Google to remove all "copyright violations" from its websites. Google responded as requested, by removing all links to the Belgian newspaper from its search index.External links
