"Under the Water" is a pop song written by Merril Bainbridge, Owen Bolwell and Stan Paulzen, produced by Siew for Bainbridge's debut album "The Garden" (1995). It was released as the album's second single in June 1995 (see 1995 in music) in Australia and February 18, 1997 (see 1997 in music) around the world. The song is about a lover who drowned. Music video

There were two music videos produced to promote the song, the first one for Australia and a second version for the United States. The original Australian version was a simple black and white video with Bainbridge walking around a forest and performing the song with a band. However, when Bainbridge broke in the U.S. with her previous single "Mouth", a sleeker video, directed by Martin Kahan, [cite web|url=http://www.mvdbase.com/video.php?id=2278|title=Music video director|work=mvdbase|accessmonthday=December 22 |accessyear=2006] was produced for the American market. It was released in December 1996 and showed a man and a girl in a room filled with water with the man drowning at the end of the video.

Chart performance

The song became Bainbridge's second top ten hit in her home country. It made it's debut in Australia at number forty-six and peaked at number four five weeks later. It spend a total of sixteen weeks in the top fifty and ended 1995 as the twenty-fourth highest selling single for the year gaining platinum accreditation by ARIA and selling around 80,000 copies [cite web|url=http://web.archive.org/web/19970526012239/www.thei.aust.com/isite/merril5.html|title=The Making of Merril|work=interview|accessmonthday=June 23|accessyear=2007] . The song was nominated for an ARIA Award as the "Highest Selling Single" for 1996, but lost to "Tomorrow" by Silverchair [cite web|url=http://www.ariaawards.com.au/history-by-year.php?year=1995|title=ARIA Award|work=ARIA Award|accessmonthday=December 22 |accessyear=2006] .

The song was released in the United States on February 18, 1997 but failed to match the Top ten success of "Mouth", peaking at ninety-one and spending only six weeks in the "Billboard" Hot 100. It was Bainbridge's last song to date to chart in the U.S. "Billboard" Hot 100.
