"Look North" is the BBC's regional TV news service for East Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and North West Norfolk, produced by BBC Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. The programmes are produced and broadcast from the BBC Broadcasting Centre at Queen's Court in Hull with reporters also based at newsrooms in Grimsby and Lincoln.

The programme can be watched in any part of the UK (and Europe) on digital satellite channel 977 on the BBC UK regional TV on satellite service and Virgin Media (formally NTL) on channel 858. The latest edition of Look North is also available to watch on the programme's website.

Broadcasts

On weekdays, "Look North" broadcasts six three-minute opt-outs during BBC Breakfast at 27 and 57 minutes past each hour. A fifteen-minute lunchtime programme follows at 1:30pm, but during the 2008 Summer Olympics the show was broadcast at 12:30pm-12:45pm, before the main half-hour edition at 6:30pm. A short 30-second headlines update during the 8pm BBC News Summary and a seven-minute late update is shown at 10:25pm, following the BBC News at Ten.

Five-minute bulletins of news and sport are broadcast on Saturdays and Sundays, although times vary.

Coverage area and Criticism

The programme covers East Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and North West Norfolk (the areas covered by BBC Radio Lincolnshire and Radio Humberside). Large parts of Lincolnshire are also covered by East Midlands Today. The Monks Rd repeater transmitter in Lincoln transmits East Midlands Today, rather than Look North after a poll amongst households in 1994. The focus of East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire has meant that for non-digital viewers, they can feel cut off from the rest of Yorkshire as much of the news coverage is items south of the Humber.

A few households in north-west Norfolk whose television aerials point towards the Belmont transmitting station in Lincolnshire receive "BBC Look North" rather than "BBC Look East", which the rest of Norfolk receives. The increase in households with digital television means that many in the area receive Look East digitally.

History

Look North's Hull-based programme began in November 2002, presented by Helen Fospero (nee Morton (nee Morton) and Peter Levy. The programme was presented from a tiny studio built in the existing Radio Humberside building in Chapel Street and directed from a technical gallery at Leeds. The programme's first editor was Roger Farrant.

Before November 11th 2002, this region was part of a larger "BBC North" region, served by Look North from Leeds with short six minute opt-outs for the area (introduced during 2001) during the main evening programme at 6:30pm and the BBC Ten O' Clock News. The first presenter of the opt-outs was Clare Frisby.

The November 2002 changes saw the opt extended to become a full half-hour programme at 6:30pm, with the 10:25pm opt-out remaining unchanged. Daytime and weekend bulletins were carried from Leeds.

In 2004, Look North, along with the radio station Radio Humberside and the Online/Interactive Project moved to new studios and offices in Queen's Gardens. Within a short time of going live from the new studios, dedicated daytime and weekend bulletins for the region were introduced, replacing the previous arrangement of carrying such bulletins from Leeds. Steve Punter replaced Roger Farrant as Editor in November 2004 but left within a few months. Punter's departure followed Helen Fospero's sudden departure in February 2005, which saw Peter Levy starting to present the main edition of "Look North" solo.

Steve Punter was replaced by Dave Betts who stayed until June 2007. The current editor, Mark Haymun, was appointed in November 2007 and now oversees an integrated operation of journalists and technical operators.
