Elvis is a given name which is derived from Old English "Alviss", "all-viss" meaning "All wise". However, in Old English a stressed "a" often becomes an "e", hence "Alvis" → "Elvis".

Most commonly, it refers to legendary American singer Elvis Presley (1935–1977). It may also be the first name of known people who were born before Presley became a household name, as in the case of Elvis Jacob Stahr, Jr. (born 1916), former U.S. administrator but, in most cases, it refers to those who either took the name themselves, or were given that name by their parents, as a tribute to Presley.
