Ankharans are a fictional alien race featured in "Sojourn", a CrossGen comics series.

Characteristics

Ankharans are tall, dark-skinned humanoids with large, functional wings protruding from their backs. They are an ancient race, possibly the oldest on the planet, and hold tradition in high regard. They primarily reside in Ankharia, a mountainous region in Five Lands, a northern continent of planet Quin.

History

Because they can fly with relative ease, they consider the "grounded" races to be inferior. They reserve special contempt for Trolls who, lead by the Mordath, invaded their kingdom in early 987th Century AD. The trolls ransacked their temples and palaces, violated many sacred Ankharian traditions and used every opportunity to humiliate the civilians. Although Ankarians eventually fought off the invaders, memories of their disgrace survived for generations.

Ankharia is a patriarchal society with a strong warrior tradition. Ankharan women are renowned for their beauty and are expected to know how to fight so that if necessary they can defend their honor. Both sexes participated in the attack on Mordath's castle in the first issue of "Sojourn".

Ankharans:
* Hold priests in high regard;
* Hold grudges for a long time (sometimes for generations);
* Are not above forgiveness;
* Carry out executions by tying up the wings of the offender and dropping him off a cliff.
