Antoni Słonimski

Antoni Słonimski (November 15, 1895 – July 4, 1976) was a Polish poet and writer.

Born into a Jewish family in Warsaw, Słonimski was baptized in infancy [Antony Polonsky, Monika Adamczyk-Garbowska Contemporary Jewish Writing in Poland: An Anthology. University of Nebraska Press, p.321 ] . In 1919 he co-founded the "Skamander" group of experimental poets with Julian Tuwim and Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz. He spent the war years in exile in England and France, returning to Poland in 1951, where he was active as an anti-Stalinist and supporter of liberalization.Adam Michnik was his private secretary.

Among his works are:
*"Droga na wschód" (1924; “Road to the East”), a collection of poems inspired by his travels to Palestine and Brazil
*"Rodzina" (1933; “Family”), a comedy about two brothers, one communist, the other Nazi
*"Dwa konce swiata" (1937; “Two Ends of the World”), a novel predicting Warsaw's destruction by a Nazi dictator
