London Buses route 312 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. The service is currently contracted to Arriva London.

History

The 312 seems to have been on quite a dramatic play for the last couple of years, as if it's fastened to a yo-yo rope with fellow Arriva South London route 197. The 312 began operation in September 1990, operated by South London, using the typical Croydon area Volvo Olympian. At this point the route was Peckham Garage to South Croydon Swan and Sugar Loaf, via Dulwich, Forest Hill, Sydenham, Penge, Anerley and Norwood Junction, then via the current route Woodside, Addiscombe and Croydon. And was operating out of South London's (or now Arriva London's) Thornton Heath Garage.

Then in 1994 the allocation changed over to South Croydon Garage leading the bus to extend there from the Sugar loaf. In 2001 the 312 converted to low floor double deck, Leyland Titan, still keeping the same route.

In 2005, by now South London had been rebranded as Arriva London, the route saw a massive change as it almost completely transformed into the 197, as it became a much shorter route Norwood Junction to South Croydon, exactly the same destinations of the old 197. The only change was that the 312 took a left at the end of Portland Road and went to Woodside tram stop, instead of carrying on like the 197 did (and still does) to Blackhorse Lane tram stop. The 197 completely replaced the old 312 from Norwood Junction to Peckham, without changing it a bit. Due to this the 197 terminated in Central Croydon (Croydon High street/Flyover to be exact), and the 312 converted to single decker, even though the old 197 used 2 deckers.
